13th Amendment
April 8th 1864
The amendment was designed to outlaw slavery, except for when it was used as punishment for a crime. The amendment was a step forward for the United States because it was the first amendment to be passed after the Civil war and during the reconstruction period. The 13th amendment was the first out of three reconstruction amendments.
