Compromise of 1850
September of 1850
The purpose of the compromise was to calm the arguments between the north and south. The compromise composed of 5 bills, and they helped with the situation regarding the status of some of the territories acquired after the Mexican American War.
Terms:
1: Texas surrendered its claim to New Mexico, which they threatened war over. Texas also gave up its claims north of the Missouri Compromise Line.
2: California was declared a free state.
3: The South got New Mexico and Utah territory.
4: A stronger Fugitive Slave Act was gained by the United States which declared enforcement of Northern public opinion and preservation of slavery in the national capital.
5: The slave trade was banned in Washington D.C.
