Edwin Stanton
Edwin Stanton served as the Secretary of War during the Lincoln administration during much of the Civil War era. The way in which Stanton organized and formed the Union troops helped form the massive resources the army had and evidently leading the Union to victory. Stanton had retained the position of Secretary of War after Lincoln’s assassination and the switch to Johnson’s administration. In an attempt to terminate the service of Stanton due to his lenient policies toward the old south, president Johnson was impeached by the House of Representatives.
“I know General Grant better than any other person in the country can know him. It was my duty to study him, and I did so day and night, when I saw him and when I did not see him, and now I tell you what I know, he cannot govern this country. “
