Hiram Revels
Hiram Revels helped organize two regiments of colored troops during the Civil War, also serving as chaplain. Hiram was also the first non-white person to serve in the U.S. senate, as well as congress as a whole. He represented Mississippi during the era of Reconstruction that followed after the American Civil War. Hiram Revels was very adamant on racial equality, as well as reassuring the people the ability of the African American people as a whole.
“Since reconstruction, the masses of my people have been, as it were, enslaved in mind by unprincipled adventurers, who, caring nothing for country, were willing to stoop to anything no matter how infamous, to secure power to themselves, and perpetuate it.”
