Purpose: To show to America that this day would not be forgotten, and that all of the lives lost on the battlefield would not be in vain as long as the union was restored.
Prior Knowledge: Lincoln’s reason behind fighting the Civil War was to unite the union, but after all of the death, many Americans grew weary as to if a Civil War was the right thing to do. This address stated that we need to restore the union at all costs, no matter how horrific.
