Dred Scott vs Sandford
March 6th, 1857
The Dred Scott vs. Sandford was a court case in which Scott argued for his freedom from his master. His master took him from his home in the south, and journeying with his master, he traveled north into the free states. There, he declared he was free since he was no longer in the south where slavery was legal. The decision went all the way to the Supreme Court, and the vote being 7 to 2, declared that Scott was not an official citizen of the United States of America, and that he was not allowed to sue his master in federal court.
